Newlywed Paralyzed in Tragic Accident Gains New Lease on Life

RALEIGH, NC – July 22, 2011 – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and The Braun Corporation, the world’s largest manufacturer of wheelchair accessible vans and wheelchair lifts, today announced the surprise wedding day donation of a brand new 2011 Toyota Sienna with a BraunAbility Rampvan^® XT conversion to Rachelle Friedman, who was paralyzed as a result of a tragic accident during her bachelorette party in May 2010.

BraunAbility and local mobility dealer Van Products Inc. had loaned 23-year-old Rachelle and her fiancé Chris Chapman a BraunAbility Sienna Rampvan^® while they planned their wedding. Unbeknownst to them, plans were in the works for the ultimate surprise: the donation of a mobility vehicle to the couple as a wedding gift they could use for years to come. 

“Rachelle’s resolve and strength are truly inspirational,” said Nick Gutwein, President of Braun. “We were so moved by her story that we wanted to help her not only while she planned for her wedding, but also as she moves forward in her married life.”

Rachelle had been using the loaned vehicle for wedding appointments and for travel between quad-rugby practices and tournaments, as well as therapy appointments. Until Van Products loaned her the vehicle, her mother had been carrying her in and out of her SUV.

“The van’s made all the difference in the world,” said Rachelle. “Not only has it saved my mom’s back, it’s just made it so much easier to get out and do things. I’ve missed this level of comfort, convenience and independence. Next up…learning to drive on my own!”

Toyota RAV4 EV Coming to Market in 2012

Recent reports have incorrectly stated that the 2012 RAV4 EV will only be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs.  We’d like to set the record straight.  The 2012 RAV4 EV will definitely be sold to the general public.  We anticipate robust public interest in the RAV4 EV and are keen to inform consumers that their future vehicle options include a battery electric Toyota.  

Toyota is the only manufacturer bringing two battery electric vehicles to the market in 2012 - the RAV4 EV and the Scion iQ EV.  While the RAV4 EV will be available to the public, the Scion iQ EV will be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs only.

Connecticut and Alabama School Teachers Named Winners in Toyota Teen Driver Educators’ Challenge

Silver Spring, Md. (July 6, 2011) – Toyota and Discovery Education announced today the Grand Prize and First Place winners of the Toyota Teen Driver Educators’ Challenge. For the Challenge, teachers across the country were tasked with developing three 90-minute project-based driving safety lessons for high school students. The winning lessons will function as public service announcements for the winners’ schools and communities regarding safe teen driving.

 

“Toyota is dedicated to saving the lives of teen drivers, and recognizes the critical role that educators and schools can play in their awareness of safe driving behaviors,” said Patricia Salas Pineda, group vice president, national philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation. “With Discovery Education, we congratulate the winners of the Toyota Teen Driver Educators’ Challenge and all those who participated for their commitment to safety.”

 

This year’s Educators’ Challenge winners are:

First Place Winner:

Gina McCarley, Lawrence County Schools, Lawrence County High School, Moulton, AL

 

The Grand Prize winner will receive a free, in-person Toyota Driving Expectations event for their local community. Toyota Driving Expectations is a free program for teen drivers and their parents that has educated nearly 18,000 participants since 2004. The program takes teens the next step beyond driver's education and introduces "real world" obstacles, conditions and distractions in a safe and controlled driving environment.

 

The First Place winner will receive two virtual driving simulators, provided by Virtual Driver Interactive. The simulators are programmed with One Simple Decision™ -- a program designed to stop impaired and distracted driving with a first person experience that focuses on real life consequences.

 

“Discovery Education is a firm believer in not only educating students on subjects inside the classroom, but teaching important lessons outside the classroom as well,” said Mary Rollins, vice president of education partnerships, Discovery Education. “The Educators’ Challenge is an exciting and effective way to get communities involved in promoting safe teen driving habits and teaching teens the consequences of distracted driving.”
