2011 Toyota Prius Offers All New PLUS Performance Package

TORRANCE, Calif., June 30, 2011 - - The Toyota Prius, the best-selling hybrid in America, offers an exciting new accessory package for 2011. First debuted at the 2010 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show -- the Prius PLUS Performance Package features components of the new PLUS hybrid performance line from Toyota Racing Development (TRD).

Developed to meet the evolving demands of the growing hybrid segment, PLUS enhances the driving experience for Toyota hybrid enthusiasts by offering cool and fun accessories that add sporty looks with performance handling. It features several Toyota accessories that complement the Prius’ core values of Eco and Advanced Technology.   PLUS is an evolution of hybrid design, where fuel-efficiency co-exists with aggressive styling and performance handling.

Available only in limited quantity, the new Prius PLUS Performance Package allows the customer to choose from four of the popular Prius colors: Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Black and Winter Gray Metallic. The added features of the PLUS make this the most fun-to-drive, performance-enhanced Prius, while maintaining its industry-leading fuel efficiency.

The Prius PLUS Performance Package starts with a seven-piece aerodynamic ground effects kit that delivers an aggressive and lower-profile stance. It includes front and rear bumper spoilers, sleek side skirts and a uniquely styled rear diffuser. The custom body kit was aerodynamically designed and engineered to reduce the vehicle’s coefficient of drag, maintaining its already great fuel efficiency.

Complementing the body kit are race-inspired 17-inch forged alloy wheels. The higher strength-to-weight ratio reduces the upsprung weight, assists in keeping the corner weight down and performance up, while maintaining the Prius’ overall light vehicle weight and high fuel efficiency. The wheels are fitted with low profile 215/45R17 tires and have a custom offset, which increases track width yet maintaining Prius’ low rolling resistance. The attractive split five-spoke pattern with a liquid metal protective finish will keep the appearance looking great.

The performance side of the PLUS package delivers excellent traction and handling that will surprise any automotive enthusiast without sacrificing fuel efficiency. The track-tuned lowering springs lower the vehicle 1.1 inches in the front and 1.3 inches in the rear.   This enhances the vehicle’s on-road performance through quicker turn-in, enhanced steering response and improved cornering ability. A tuned rear sway bar is added to help reduce body lean for flatter cornering and maneuverability. This helps provide the driver control and confidence while touring, mountain driving or just plain having fun.  The sway bar is constructed of high carbon spring steel, powder coated to prevent corrosion and road damage.

Finishing off this exciting package is custom badging for an exclusive look combined with limited-edition PLUS logo carpet floor mats for that extra custom touch.

The new Prius PLUS Performance Package represents the first installment of the new PLUS brand of accessories from Toyota. Available as an add-on option on all Prius models, the PLUS Performance Package adds accessories in a unique combination at a special value price of $3,699 for Prius Two, Three, and Four models and $2,999 for the Prius Five. Ordering for the limited production 2011 Prius PLUS Performance Package will begin in July.

Toyota Announces National Expansion of Safety Program for African American and Hispanic Families

'Buckle Up for Life' Addresses Major Public Health Concern for Minority Children and Adults
Program Will Expand to Chicago, Denver, San Antonio and Other Key U.S. Cities

June 28, 2011 – CINCINNATI, OH – Toyota today announced a $1 million commitment to support the national expansion of Buckle Up for Life, a safety program developed by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, to help address the extraordinarily high number of African American and Hispanic children, teens and adults killed or injured in automobile crashes. With this commitment, Buckle Up for Life will expand to Chicago, Denver and San Antonio in 2011/2012, to provide safety measures and education designed to greatly reduce the number of fatalities resulting from vehicle crashes within the Hispanic and African-American communities. Cincinnati Children’s will simultaneously continue to implement the program in the Greater Cincinnati community. Other key U.S. cities will follow in 2013.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), automobile crashes are one of the leading causes of death within the Hispanic and African-American communities, and a lack or improper installation of car seats and less frequent use of seat belts are significant factors. Studies from the CDC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) note that:
  • Hispanic children are three times more likely to die in a vehicle crash than Caucasian children;
  • Automobile crashes are the leading cause of death for African Americans under the age of 14 and the second leading cause of death between the ages of 15-34; and
  • Non-seat belt use is the primary cause of accidental injury-related deaths for African Americans of all ages while motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Hispanics 1 to 44.
In response, in 2004 pediatric surgeons and injury prevention coordinators from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center teamed up with Toyota to create Buckle Up for Life – or “Abróchate a la Vida” in Spanish – a multi-generational, faith-based safety initiative in 17 Hispanic churches in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati that provides interactive vehicle safety education, free child car safety seats and car seat inspections to encourage safety habits among drivers and passengers. The program was subsequently expanded to Los Angeles in 2010.

Buckle Up for Life’s results have been substantial. For example, after participating in the Buckle Up for Life program in Greater Cincinnati, the number of Hispanic adults and children using seat belts and car seats more than doubled.

“Safety is a critical priority for Toyota,” said Patricia Pineda, Toyota’s Group Vice President of National Philanthropy. “In addition to enhancing the safety of our own vehicles, we are dedicated to supporting education programs that help protect drivers and passengers at every stage of life. Buckle Up for Life has proven to be a successful and sustainable model for meeting the pressing needs of the community, and Toyota is proud to support its expansion around the country.”

“We created Buckle Up for Life because we were seeing a disproportionate number of African American and Hispanic children coming into the hospital with severe crash-related injuries. This disparity was unacceptable and we knew we had to do something about it,” noted Dr. Rebeccah L. Brown, Associate Director of Trauma Services and Director of the Buckle Up for Life Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. “We appreciate the significant input and support that Toyota has provided at every step of the way as well as their leadership in helping to bring Buckle Up for Life to a wider audience around the country.”

Toyota TAPESTRY Grant Program Announces 2011 Award Recipients

Science Education Receives Boost with $500,000 in Funding From Toyota TAPESTRY Program

  • Program to provide 50 educators with grants totaling $500,000 to improve science learning opportunities for students
  • Since the program’s inception in 1990, nearly $10 million has been awarded to 1,197 educators nationwide
  • Winning programs will begin project implementation in June 2011
TORRANCE, Calif. – June 13, 2011 – A group of 50 U.S. science educators has been selected to receive $500,000 in grants through the Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers Program. Fully funded by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS), the program recognizes and provides support to educators who are making a difference by demonstrating excellence and creativity in science education. The winning programs will begin project implementation in June 2011.

The Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers program has been enhancing science education for students for more than 20 years. At the onset of the program in 1991, it offered an additional boost to the efforts of teachers across the country. Today, in light of the current crisis facing the nation’s schools, the Toyota TAPESTRY program helps to ensure there are engaging science education programs available to get students excited about science.

Over the course of the program’s 21 year history, Toyota has provided nearly $10 million in grants and touched tens of thousands of students nationwide. As a result of the Toyota TAPESTRY program, numerous educators have gone on to win prestigious awards, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, the NSTA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Einstein Fellowship Award. Additionally, teachers have had the opportunity to expand their science-based projects beyond their classrooms, and impact their communities and even state legislatures. Frequently, this includes garnering substantial additional funding for the teacher’s program and school.

Program Overview
Sponsored by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. and administered by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Toyota TAPESTRY Program serves as the nation’s largest science teacher grant program of its kind and awards funding for innovative science proposals submitted by educators in environmental science. Since the program’s inception in 1990, educators from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Mariana Islands have received Toyota TAPESTRY grants.

Judges, accomplished in various areas of science education, select projects that stand out in creativity, risk-taking and originality. Fifty teachers will receive grants of $10,000 each, totaling $500,000. This year’s projects range from creating bio-fuel in an effort to help school communities go green, to increasing food production on farms in urban environments.

Toyota TAPESTRY is open to elementary, middle and high school science teachers in the United States and its territories. Teachers may apply individually or in teams online.

Quotes
“It’s extremely rewarding to support exceptional teachers who bring quality science education to our children. The Toyota TAPESTRY program was built on the vision of recognizing such teachers and supporting their efforts to improve science learning opportunities for children. Over the past 21 years, we’ve had the opportunity to turn that dream into reality.”

“There is nothing more gratifying than honoring outstanding science educators who demonstrate excellence, creativity and vision in science teaching. We are extremely proud of the winners of the 2011 Toyota TAPESTRY Grants for Science Teachers program and for their unwavering commitment to their students and profession.”
